The problem is that so many authors are still struggling with the basics of video marketing and YouTube marketing and I hope this post will help you get started with confidence.
You might be surprised to discover that there are MANY ways to create simple videos to promote your book.
As a fiction author you can use video to bring characters and events to life and really solidify that bond you have with your readers.
In Fact, As A Fiction Author You Can Create Videos That:
1. Share your writing journey – I call these Video Diaries
2. Create buzz around your pre-launch
3. Give people good reasons to buy your book
4. Promote your profile
5. Share insights on the characters
6. Help build your tribe of raving fans
7. Allow your fans to connect with you and become loyal advocates
And I’m just scratching the surface here.
Now before you get all excited about YouTube and its possibilities there are things you NEED TO UNDERSTAND to maximize your efforts.
Facts About Your YouTube You Cannot Ignore
* It was bought out by Google in 2006
* It is the second largest search engine (bigger than Bing, Yahoo, and ASK ALL COMBINED). It’s second to Google and right before Facebook.
* Every second there are 46,296 YouTube videos being viewed all around the world. In just 8 years it has transformed the web from mono media to multimedia.
* 800 Million+ monthly unique visitors.
* There are 4 Billion hours of videos watched EVERY SINGLE MONTH – that’s 450,000 years of video viewed each month!
* Over 72 hours of videos are uploaded every minute
In other words, there’s a lot of competition for those eyeballs.
So, How Do You Maximize Your YouTube Marketing Results?
First you have to decide if you’re going to educate or entertain or edutain
Then you’ll want to follow the following strategies!
#1. Create compelling videos. Most of us will never create a “viral” video with millions of views because we don’t know the key elements to going viral on YouTube, but you can still be quite successful with your videos even if you don’t have millions of views. The reality is that most of us couldn’t handle a million new customers all at once, anyway.
Focus on creating content that addresses your readers’ needs.
Your goal should be to create videos that are helpful, valuable and compelling to your potential readers.
And don’t forget to inject some fun!
If you can blog, you can as easily create a video. Your video content may consist of how-to’s, answers to frequently asked questions, expert interviews, screen video captures, slide shows and more. It can also be simply you sharing your author’s journey.
#2. Make it easy to find your videos. There’s ONE WAY for your videos to show up at the top of the search engines and that’s video SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – aka that’s simply you making it dead simple for YouTube & Google’s to recommend your videos and for them to show up on the first page!
To make easy for search engines to find your videos, you’ll want to focus on three key areas:
a. Title: Make sure your targeted keywords are in the first few words of your title. Another trick is to add a colon after your initial keywords and rephrase your title for maximum effect.
For example, your video on saving money for college might be called “Quit Smoking: How To Cut Out Smoking From Your Life For Good.”
b. Description: Two things to keep in mind here: 1) start your description with a full URL, and 2) be as descriptive and keyword-rich as possible. This will help you get found more easily by people searching YouTube for your type of content.
You can also include more URLs throughout your content.
c. Tags: Be sure to include any and all related keywords in the tags field. These aren’t the only variables in getting found, but they’re the easiest to manage and control.
#3. Become the AUTHORITY in your Amazon category. You know I’m big on establishing yourself as the AUTHORITY and there’s no better way than to brand your channel. As with every social media platform, the more branded and active your profile appears, the more credibility you appear to have … warranted or not. A default design makes you appear fly-by-night. It takes 30 minutes or less to fully brand your YouTube channel.
#4. Use annotations to build subscribers and take readers to your author page.You can add annotations to your YouTube videos that include clickable calls to action (aka what do you want people to do). These annotations appear on top of your videos for a specified length of time and can include links to other videos, playlists or channels, or include a subscribe option. Since February 2013, YouTube now allows us to add annotations that take people to our own sites.
#5. Leverage other social media platforms.YouTube is a social media platform, not an island. You NEED to share your videos so others can watch them.
Share your YouTube on these platforms:
* Your blog
* Linked In
* New My Space
… and many more platforms!
By creating content that resonates with your audience, building up a branded channel and actively sharing your videos, you can greatly increase the return on your investment in creating online videos to help promote your book.
